If you want to rent a photo booth, you'll quickly come across different terms: photo booth, Fotobox, photo kiosk. Do they all mean the same thing? In this article we explain the differences and similarities and show which solution suits your event in Berlin.

1. Terminology: What's What?
First, an overview of the key terms:
Photo Booth
The English term originally refers to the classic enclosed cabins found at train stations and shopping centers, with curtains, coin slots and passport photos. Today, "photo booth" is often used as a catch-all term for all types of event photo stations.
Fotobox
The most common German term for a mobile photo station at events. A Fotobox is not an enclosed kiosk but an open system with camera, screen, and printer. It's specially set up for events and collected afterwards.
Photo Kiosk / Fotoautomat
Classically refers to the stationary passport photo machine. In the event context, "rent a photo kiosk" is often used synonymously with "rent a photo booth." Technically, however, an event photo booth is not a self-service kiosk: it is delivered, set up and collected again for each event.
Summary: In the event context, photo booth, Fotobox and photo kiosk mean the same thing, namely a mobile photo station with instant print and digital gallery.
2. From Photo Kiosk to Modern Photo Booth
The history of the photo booth spans over 100 years:
- 1925: The first photo kiosk, the "Photomaton", is installed in New York
- 1950s-70s: Photo kiosks spread worldwide, mainly for passport photos
- 2000s: The first digital event photo booths appear, still with simple webcams
- 2010s: The photo booth boom begins, and props, social sharing and templates become standard
- 2020s: Modern photo booths with DSLR cameras, AI background removal, and RGB lighting
Today's event photo booth shares only the basic concept with the classic photo kiosk: take a photo and take it home. In quality, features and flexibility it is in a completely different league.
3. The Technical Differences
Although the terms are often used interchangeably, there are technical differences between the various systems:
Classic Photo Kiosk (Cabin)
- Enclosed cabin with curtain
- Fixed installation (not mobile)
- Simple camera, flash
- 4 passport photos as a strip
- Coin-operated, no supervision
- No props, no customization possible
Basic Event Photo Booth (Webcam)
- Open setup (no cabin)
- iPad or webcam as camera
- Touchscreen operation
- Basic templates and filters
- Often without instant print (digital only)
- Budget-friendly entry solution
Premium Photo Booth (DSLR)
- DSLR camera with 24+ megapixels
- Professional studio flash
- Dye-sublimation instant print (waterproof)
- RGB LED lighting
- AI background removal
- Custom templates and branding
- Digital gallery with QR code
- Full-service with attendant
4. What a Modern Photo Booth Can Do Today
Modern photo booths like the 030Box can do much more than you would expect from a classic photo kiosk:
- AI Background Removal: The background is replaced with a motif of your choice, such as a beach, outer space or your company logo. With the 030Box this runs on our own computer in Germany, so the booth needs an internet connection (Update October 2026)
- RGB Lighting: LED colors matching your event theme or corporate design
- Live Slideshow: All photos displayed in real-time on a projector or screen
- Digital Card Game: Challenge cards give guests small photo tasks
- GIF & Boomerang Mode: Animated recordings in addition to photos
- Online Gallery: All photos instantly accessible via QR code
- Custom Branding: Logo, colors, and text on every print
The difference in numbers: While a classic photo kiosk produces 4 passport photos, a modern photo booth at a 4-hour event creates an average of 200-400 high-quality photos, with instant print and digital gallery.
